Karen, John & Elvis

Not sure if either is Karen or Elvis - but we reckon this is Deirdre on the left and Alan on the right.

TREAT FOR KAREN FANS
Fans Karen Carpenter are in for a treat at this year’s Buxton Festival Fringe in a brand new musical show by local writers Alan Charnley and Deirdre Costello.

The pair, buoyed by last year’s sell out success of the Dolls House Theatre production, Family Victim will present Come Back to Blackpool, Karen Carpenter at the Grove Hotel, Buxton, on Fridays July 16 and 23 from 9pm.

So just why is a woman waving a placard outside a Karen Carpenter Tribute show pleading ‘Come back to Blackpool, Karen Carpenter’?

In the show you hear Karen’s greatest hits sung and there are cameo slots by none other than Elvis Presley and John Lennon.

Deirdre said: “Alan and I discovered we were both massive Carpenters' fans last year when we were doing Family Victim. We have taken pains to see that the depiction of her in our show is accurate and respectful. There is a surprise twist in the play, but we’ll have to keep that for opening night.

“It’s a great opportunity to hear Karen’s hits – and to see Elvis and John Lennon in one night!”

Actor Deirdre Costello settled in Buxton after falling in love with place while filming Dead Man Weds, the Dave Spikey comedy which also starred Johnny Vegas.

Deirdre not only starred in Full Monty but also has appeared in other top shows such as Emmerdale, Coronation Street, London’s Burning and The Cops.

Alan formed Boy in a Dolls House as a vehicle for his own songwriting and he and the band appeared on Channel 5 TV last year with their Recession Song and reached the semi finals of the Live and Unsigned competition with the line-up that also included Ben Squires, Jolly Jock Richardson and Bongo Bob Briggs.

The current line-up includes Stuart Kelly, Benjamin Ford and Jim Lampard.

He has recorded for the CBS label and had a No2 smash in Greece three years ago with his song ‘Big Romance’ only kept off top spot by Shakira.

“But we were ahead in the charts of U2, Coldplay and Oasis so it wasn’t bad, and Shakira was a lot better looking!” he says.

Tickets are available for Come Back to Blackpool Karen Carpenter from the Opera House, or e-mail info@boy-in-a-dolls-house.co.uk or call 01298 214454.
