Q & A - Full Metal Waistcoat

Full Metal Waistcoat are made of hard stuff. None of the harsh words said of their so-called performance last year have put them off. They're back - in spades (we may need to consult with someone to see if that expression is permissible). Last year they interfered with our tea-time. This year they're here for lunch and dinner (Wednesday July 16th) and further bouts of indigestion on Thursday 17th - in the Barrel Room. Catch them if you dare.

You have played at the Buxton Fringe before why are you coming back?
Because we’ve become part of the furniture after all these years (ie people sort of expect us to be there, and look angry if they try to sit down on us and we aren’t) and because we’re not getting any (gigs) in Oxford. Also, we got this great review that was full of ideal quotes for our publicity material.

Amongst Buxton’s famous sons and (adopted daughter) are Tim Brooke-Taylor, Dave Lee Travis and Vera Brittain. How do you feel about following in the footsteps of such giants?
Like we have very small shoes. Who are Dave, Lee and Travis?

What reaction do you expect from your audiences?
Surprised, appalled, touched, not pressing charges.

5 pieces of fruit and veg a day – what do you choose to eat?
We just scoffed a load of mushrooms (in a risotto) baby spinach, orange pepper, and melon. Our flatmate also had some strawberries. Generally, we don’t manage 5 but we think we’re good people despite that.

Do you have any superstitions or routines that you follow before starting a performance?
To prevent any sort of inappropriateness or carelessness, we have to drink several pints of a beverage known in the south as ‘beer’. I tend to always put my guitar strap on before we play, and the bassist does this thing where he plays a note, looks uncomfortable, then wiggles the metal pins on the end of the instrument.

Buxton Mineral Water – how do you drink it?
With gin, or during marathons.

Are there any other performers/artists that you especially admire? If so, who and why?
Jon Boden and Jon Bon Jovi. The former for his peerless brilliance and modesty and the latter for his stretching of a tiny amount of talent yet managing to be so very, very pleased with himself.

What question would you have liked to answer here?
“How do you perform with such verve, energy and presence?”

What is your answer to?
Stop patronising me.
